Skin Tags

Skin tags are benign, innocuous growths that vary in size, shape and attachment. They are often found in areas where there is friction, such as where the skin creases or clothes rub. Skin tags (technically known as fibro-vascular papilloma) are increasingly common as we age and affect almost half of the population. While they are benign and do not pose any direct risk to your health, skin tags can easily be removed if they are impacting your self-esteem or mental well-being.

Blood Spots - Cherry Angioma

Cherry Angioma are small blood spots that are benign vascular blemishes. They can vary in size from small pin dots to as large as a penny; and in colour from bright red to darker tones.  Cherry angioma are not painful, but may bleed when scratched and can become distressing, particularly if they are in difficult to mask areas.

Red Veins & Telangiectasia

Telangiectasia, also known as red veins, thread veins and broken capillaries, are common in exposed and vulnerable areas such as the nose. These can be caused by trauma to the skin.  Treatment aims to restore the previous appearance of the skin.

Following advanced diathermy treatment, you can expect to see a 60-80% improvement in the appearance of your thread veins depending on your age, health and lifestyle.

Spider Naevei

This is a small, raised, centrally dilated blood vessel having the appearance of a blood spot, with smaller dilated capillaries radiating from it, rather like the legs of a spider. They are commonly found on the cheeks and upper chest area and are often caused by damage to the skin (squeezing) or an injury to the face or during pregnancy when hormonal changes occur.Over a period of weeks, the thread veins will gradually fade, depending on their severity. The greater the area, the more treatments are necessary. This is discussed during the initial consultation.

Millia

These are tiny, hard, white dots located under the upper layer of the skin. They contain a build-up of solidified sebum (the skin’s natural oil) from the oil glands and are often found around the eye area, on the cheeks, nose and chin. Some experts believe that milia are caused by sun-induced changes as the skin ages or dry, dehydrated skin (due to poor skin care or facial products which are too strong).

Solar Lentigo / Liver Spots

Whether you call them age spots, liver spots, sun spots, brown spots or solar lentigo, these benign areas of discolouration commonly appear on our hands, neck, shoulders and face as we get older. They are caused by a build-up of melanin and ‘lipofuscin’ in the connective tissue and are completely harmless. It results from exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation, which causes local proliferation of melanocytes and accumulation of melanin within the skin cells (keratinocytes). Solar lentigos or lentigines are very common, especially in people over the age of 40 years.

Seborrhoeic keratosis

Seborrhoeic keratosis is a benign, asymptomatic mass, primarily caused by the ageing process. It is also known as seborrhoeic warts, senile warts, barnacles or basal cell papilloma. They have a thick wart-like surface and are usually colourless when they appear and become brown to black over time. Seborrhoeic keratoses are extremely common. It has been estimated that over 90% of adults over the age of 60 years have one or more of them. They occur in males and females of all races, typically beginning to erupt in the 30s or 40s. They are uncommon under the age of 20 years.

Dermatosis Papulosa Nigra

Dermatosa Papulosa Nigra are small brown or black raised areas of skin that affect one-third of people with Fitzpatrick skin types 5 and 6. In many cases, Dermatosa Papulosa Nigra is a genetic condition that appears on the face, upper cheeks and temples, eyes and chest and increases with age. While Dermatosa Papulosa Nigra does not pose a threat to your health, it can have an impact on your self-confidence and mental well-being.  D.P.N.  usually begins in adolescence. The incidence, number and size of lesions increases with age.

Sebaceous Cysts

Sebaceous cysts are created when a small amount of sebum is retained under the skin and blocked by an overgrowth of surface skin. They are relatively uncommon and are often confused with epidermoid cysts (also known as infundibular cysts) and pilar cysts.

Sebaceous cysts are filled with a clear, oily liquid made by the sebaceous glands and are usually found on the face, neck and trunk of the body.

Epidermoid cysts usually affect young and middle-aged adults and contain keratin and pus. These can be formed after trauma or injury or from a hair follicle that has become inflamed.

Pilar cysts are subcutaneous keratin-filled cysts that originate from the outer hair root sheath. They can often be found in multiples on the scalp of middle-aged females.

   Warts Common & Plane

Warts are small, rough, viral growths on the skin. They are very common and are usually spread by direct skin-to-skin contact or indirectly through shared contact with contaminated surfaces. Warts do not usually cause any other symptoms in people with normally functioning immune systems and usually resolve without treatment, although this can take months or years.

Xanthelasma palpebrarum

Xanthelasma palpebrarum are blemishes caused by deposits of cholesterol under the surface of the skin. They range in size from very small up to 1″ in diameter and are normally found on the eyelids.

Xanthelasma, or xanthelasma palpebrarum (XP), is a harmless blemish, caused by deposits of cholesterol under the surface of the skin. Yellow growth appears on or by the corners of your eyelids next to the nose. Cholesterol deposits build up under your skin to form a xanthelasma. They range in size from very small up to 1″ in diameter
Having xanthelasmas could be a sign of another condition, such as:
  Diabetes.
  Hyperlipidemia (high cholesterol).
  Thyroid problems.

Syringoma

Syringomas are a cluster of bumps on your skin that are either yellow or the same color as your natural skin tone. These bumps form because your sweat glands (eccrine glands) are overworking.

Syringomas and milia have similar symptoms where a group of bumps will form on your skin. Milia are tiny white bumps filled with the skin protein keratin that form most often on a newborn’s skin. Syringomas are small sweat gland growths that look like a yellow or a natural skin tone pimple.

Poikiloderma of Civatte

Poikiloderma of Civatte is characterised by confluent reddish-brown patches with atrophy that symmetrically involve sun-exposed areas such as the sides of the neck and lateral aspect of the cheeks. Poikiloderma of Civatte usually spares the shaded area under the chin.

This condition is mainly cosmetic and not a health concern. It doesn’t cause symptoms. Long-term sun damage is the primary contributing factor. So, while it’s a cosmetic condition, it’s also a sign that you may need better sun protection - please feel free to ask me about the best sun blockers and SPFs available.

Verrucae

Verrucae, also known as plantar warts, can be extremely painful. They can range from a small pinhead up to a large singular or widespread mosaic covering and often contain black dots. Verrucae can disappear spontaneously or they can last for years.
